HALL OF FAMER TOYE SELECTED TO CONCACAF HALL OF FAME
NOTE: We have a local connection to this event. Clive Toye was an AYSO coach and our Regional Commissioner, Phil Ishmael, coached Toye’s grandson.
ONEONTA, NY (April 15, 2009) – Clive Toye, inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2003, has been selected for induction into the CONCACAF Hall of Fame. The regional governing body of soccer, CONCACAF represents North America, Central America, the Caribbean region and its 40 member nations, including the United States and U.S. Soccer, before FIFA, the international governing body of the sport.
Toye was honored by CONCACAF for his work in building soccer in the United States and the region. In 1998 he joined the international organization as a senior consultant and revamped the communications and media relations departments. He was honored by the National Soccer Hall of Fame for his contributions to the North American Soccer League, beginning with his initial work in 1967, continuing through several years with the New York Cosmos, where he was instrumental in the bringing of international star Pele to the team, and concluding his contributions in the waning years of the league with the Chicago Sting and Toronto Blizzard. Toye saw both the Cosmos and the Sting win NASL Championships during his tenures at the teams. He also worked in the league office during his 18 years of service to the NASL.
“Congratulations to Clive on this honor,” Hall of Fame President Steve Baumann said. “He has contributed to soccer in the United States and the region on a national and international level for more than 40 years. We were proud to recognize his work in 2003 and are pleased for Clive that CONCACAF has also chosen to honor him.”
CONCACAF will induct Toye into the Hall of Fame at its XXVI Ordinary Congress in the Bahamas on June 1, 2009.
