Become a Volunteer

We need volunteers!
Ossining AYSO is a volunteer, non-for profit organization run by parents like you.  Every coach, assistant coach, referee and administrator is a volunteer. Some of our volunteers have played soccer their entire lives and others had never kicked a soccer ball before getting involved with AYSO. All of us do it because it is fun and worthwhile. If you only have a little bit of time and want to help your child and our community, we will find something useful for you to do.

Please contact Phil Ismael, Regional Commissioner (
914-762-3826 or pik94@aol.com) if you are interested in helping us.  We have many “jobs” available for our volunteers, such as:

COACHES:  This is the bedrock position on which AYSO is built.  It involves teaching the children how to play soccer, assigning positions and playing time.  We must work to make sure that coaches can concentrate on coaching and are not burdened with administrative duties that can be performed by other parents (see Assistant Coaches and Team Parents).

ASSISTANT COACHES:  Assistant coaches need not have prior knowledge of soccer.  This is a great way to learn the game.  The job entails helping the coach enforce discipline and reiterating the teaching of the coach to the smaller groups that the practice breaks up into.

TEAM PARENTS: The individuals who free up the coach by sharing the responsibility for organizing the team off-the field.  Team parents assist the coach by doing such things as setting up telephone trees, (a list of parents' telephone numbers arranged so that the coach only calls one person, who calls two people, etc.). This is so that the coach's messages as to changes in practice times, etc. is conveyed to the team with minimal effort by the coach.

REFEREES: The referee is totally in charge of the game.  Referees are usually parents who volunteer their time to help make your child's youth soccer experience a positive one and need your support and encouragement.  The referee ensures that player safety and fair play come first.

PLAYER REFEREES: We encourage older players (U19, U16, U14) to become trained and certified referees to handle the younger division (U6, U8, U10) games.

STAFF:  Parents working in staff positions will be called as needed to assist in preparing mailings, entering the names of the players into the computer, etc.

FIELDS:  This involves designing and lining the fields and making sure that they are in playing condition.

BOARD MEMBERS: We have many positions on our board available for voluteers with different skills.  Please visit the board page or contact any of the current board members to learn how to join us.

VOLUNTEERS

Many will be shocked to find
When the day of judgment nears
That there’s a special place in heaven
Set aside for volunteers.
Furnished with big recliners, satin couches and footstools
Where there are no committee chairmen,
No group leaders or car-pools,
No eager team that needs a coach,
No bazaar and no bake sale.
There will be nothing to staple,
Not one thing to mail.
Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners
And treats fit for a king.
You ask, “Who’ll serve these privileged few
And work for all they’re worth?”
Why, all those who reaped the benefits
And not once volunteered on Earth.
